Summer Portrait Photography in St. Moritz with Anastassia
St. Moritz is often associated with winter, snow-covered landscapes and elegant alpine holidays — but summer has a completely different kind of beauty here. The light is softer, the lakes turn deep green and turquoise, and the mountains create a calm, almost cinematic background for portraits.
This short portrait session with Anastassia was created on a summer day in St. Moritz. Anastassia is a professional ice dancer, and she wanted a simple but elegant portrait series that felt natural, feminine and connected to the alpine surroundings.
The idea was not to overcomplicate the shoot. No heavy styling, no artificial setup, no overly staged concept. Just a beautiful summer location, clean lines, lake views and a portrait session that moved between modern architecture, mountain scenery and the quiet atmosphere of the water.
A Summer Portrait Session Between Architecture and Nature
We started with a more graphic, editorial approach. The dark wooden architecture, the balcony lines and the mountain view created a strong contrast around Anastassia. These images became some of my favourites from the session, especially in black and white.
The setting gave the portraits a more refined and timeless feeling. Instead of relying only on the landscape, the architecture helped to frame her posture and expression. It created a quiet, elegant mood — something between a portrait and a fashion editorial.
This is the kind of environment I always look for during a portrait shoot in St. Moritz: places that do not just look beautiful, but also give structure to the image. A good portrait location should support the person in the photograph, not overpower them.
Lake Views and Alpine Light
After the architectural part of the session, we moved closer to the lake. In summer, the water around St. Moritz and the Upper Engadin has a very distinct colour. Depending on the light, it can shift from soft green to deep blue, and it gives portraits a very fresh, natural atmosphere.
For Anastassia’s session, the lake became a calm visual background. Her green dress worked beautifully with the colour of the water and the surrounding forest. The result was a series of portraits that feel summery, relaxed and elegant without becoming too casual.
Working around the lake also allowed us to create different types of images within a short time: full-body portraits, closer editorial frames, quiet details and wider images that show the landscape. This is important for a portrait session, because the final gallery should not feel repetitive. It should tell a small story.
Portraits with a Sense of Movement
Because Anastassia is a professional ice dancer, movement was naturally part of the session. Not in an obvious or theatrical way, but through posture, body language and small gestures. A turn of the head, a step forward, the way she held herself — these details gave the images a more graceful and expressive quality.
This is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing dancers, athletes and performers. They usually understand how small movements change the feeling of a photograph. But the same approach works with anyone. A good portrait session is not about forcing poses. It is about finding simple movements that feel natural and flattering.
Why Summer Portraits in St. Moritz Work So Well
Winter in St. Moritz is dramatic and iconic, but summer is underrated for portraits. The atmosphere is quieter, the colours are softer, and the locations feel more open. You can create images that feel elegant and alpine without the heavy winter mood.
A summer portrait session can be perfect for solo portraits, couples, engagement photos, personal branding or simply as a beautiful memory from a stay in St. Moritz. The best results usually come from keeping the session relaxed, choosing two or three strong locations and allowing enough time for the person to feel comfortable in front of the camera.
With Anastassia, the goal was exactly that: a short but refined portrait session with a strong summer feeling. A mix of architecture, water, mountains and quiet editorial portraits.
For me, this session is a good reminder that St. Moritz is not only a winter destination. It is also a beautiful place for elegant, cinematic summer portraits.
